hey.. Found your post on reddit about moving to VA, regarding your Corvair.. I'm an antique car mechanic that daily drives 6 of them with antique plates.. I recognized your screen name from here, and figured this would be faster than setting up a reddit account and losing the rest of my life in that rabbit hole.. Let me know if you have questions..

Matt

I'll be moving to the Stafford area, the car's getting shipped out tomorrow. Seems to be a few guys around there, you don't know someone named Frank at all do you?

Nope, I live in Winchester.. The trick is, go find original year plates. You can usually find them for forty bucks for the pair or so, (in fact, you shouldn't pay more). Take them to the DMV and have them issued to your car. They will be antiques, and you will need a regularly registered car for "daily use", but the rules seem to be a bit fuzzier with original year tags.. The rules are the same as antiques, but police seem to notice less. Plus, they look way better than state issued antique tags. I've always owned old cars and daily driven them with these tags, no issue.

Oh, I almost forgot.. You can also register these plates normally, and re up registration every year, which then subjects you to yearly inspections.. (Safety, not smog).. Which may be why the police don't notice them as much, also because many law enforcement personnel are also gear heads, they get it. They mostly crack down on the guy driving his clapped out '84 F150 full of scrap metal, or fertilizer with antique tags. Make sure your lights work, and nothing is obviously falling off, and you should be fine.

Honestly, I should pass inspection easily enough, and DMV fees there are way cheaper than CA. So I'm going to do a normal registration. I'll have to take the "pre-69" waiver on the defroster since pretty much all of the ducts are gone. As in missing.
